Petra, hewn into pink rose sandstone
The eastern entrance to the Jordanian site of Petra through The Siq (the shaft), stimulated me also in my third visit. A narrow gorge of about 100 meters deep opens in a dramatic view of Al Khazneh (The Treasury), hewn gloriously into the cliff. We climbed to the top of the mountains, descended in the narrow ravines, and admired the rock-cut architecture, the colorful sandstone formations, and the Bedouins who utilize the ancient Nabataean constructions. The photographs in the gallery were taken during my recent visit in April 2009.
